Väsen with Chris Stout & Catriona MacKay and Dante Quartet
The playful sounds of Swedish folk band Väsen fill the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum as part of Celtic Connections 2024. Founded in 1989 by duo Olov Johansson (nyckelharpa) and Mikael Marin (viola), Väsen’s music is intense and full of humour. They create their very own musical language, as modern as it is ancient, and with its foundation firmly rooted in the traditional tunes of Uppland.
Joining the bill are iconic Scottish duo Chris Stout & Catriona McKay. Along with the Dante Quartet, Donald Grant and guest Double Bass, they shall play new music from a forthcoming album. Performing a new double harp concerto are Scotland’s Catriona McKay and Trondheim Symphony’s Ruth Potter playing two different harps with a shared history. ‘Fragile Beauty’ was composed especially for them by Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen (b.1980). The harp is red-listed as endangered in Norway so ‘Fragile Beauty’ became a work that focuses on things threatened with extinction.
