Celtic Connections 2024

His trailblazing debut album, Pull The Right Rope, not only earned alt-folk singer-songwriter Junior Brother Choice Music Prize and 2019 RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards nominations, but also saw the inimitably talented Ronan Kealy named by The Irish Times as that year’s Best Irish Act.

Unmissable live shows – and being played on Cillian Murphy’s BBC Radio 6 music show – has also built the rapidly growing following of this ‘idiosyncratic, challenging’ and unique artist.

Junior Brother’s lauded new album, The Great Irish Famine, leaps boldly into an exciting chapter with richly lyrical new material, characterised by profound, brutally beautiful storytelling, and powerful, emotive vocals accompanied by distinctive guitar and foot tambourine.

Ceitidh Mac blends the warming tones of the cello and soaring vocals to create a transformative sound that puts a progressive twist on the alt.folk genre. Originally from Wales, now based in Newcastle, Ceitidh’s intriguing lyrics have been mesmerising audiences in the know across the UK. Her live show is an innovative take on traditional and alternative folk songs, sitting alongside her own original material exploring topics ranging from illuminating everyday experiences to subjects of deeper self reflection.
