A unique concert reflecting and celebrating on the cultural and historical links between Scotland and India, partly inspired by award-winning book ‘The Golden Road’: How Ancient India Transformed the World by Scottish historian Wiliam Dalrymplewho will read & discuss parts of the book and its ideas along with the music performances on the night.
India Alba is a collaboration between Indian and Scottish musicians whose combination of Indian classical and Scottish traditional backgrounds have created a unique and fascinating exploration of world culture.
Their debut album Reels and Ragas from 15 years ago, featuring Ross Ainslie (pipes) with the late Nigel Richards (guitar) along with Sharat Chandra Srivastava (violin) & Gyan Singh (tabla) developed a sound which reflects the broad common ground between their traditions. Many raga gats (themes), particularly those from the borders of the Himalayas, have close relatives in the melodies of the Scottish highlands and islands, and for both of them the drone sounds of the bagpipes or the tampura play an important part in the music indeed, their second album, High Beyond, was recorded in the Hartola region of the Himalayas in 2009.
Other musicians perfoming on this special collaboration include renowned cellist Su-a Lee, guitar players Ali Hutton and Graham Stephen and additional guests still to be announced.
