Celtic Connections 2023

Scottish folk quartet Westward the Light present their upcoming new album Flow Country. After years of collaboration, Charlie Grey, Sally Simpson, Owen Sinclair and Joseph Peach formed the band to make instrumental Scottish music in a way both true to their traditional roots, and pointing to the future.  On fiddle, viola, piano, and guitar, the band’s powerful and dynamic music is reflective of upbringings immersed in the nature and landscapes of Scotland.

Westward the Light's debut self-titled recording, released in 2020 entered the Official UK Folk top 40 and attracting great critical acclaim. After a year-long hiatus, March 2023 sees the release of the band’s hotly anticipated second album, Flow Country. The record sees both the development and refinement of their approach - their best work to date.

“This band flat-out cooks” (Divide and Conquer)

Scottish Uilleann piper, flautist and composer, Calum Stewart, has a powerful and lyrical playing style, which is rooted in the traditional music of his native Northern Scotland. His distinct musical voice takes you on a journey into the history and lore of the land, through traditional tunes and new compositions inspired by the local legends and tales from Morayshire and the Highlands.

He is joined by percussive Scottish step dancer, Sophie Stephenson, alongside Sylvain Quéré (bouzouki) and Ross Saunders (bass), to create a vibrant and dynamic quartet.
