A former youthful prodigy of Italian jazz, now a longtime adopted Scot, singer-songwriter and double bassist Roberto Cassani brilliantly coalesced multiple musical identities with his 2021 album Ansema (We Stand), featuring guest appearances by Ross Ainslie, Anna Massie, John Somerville, Hamish Napier, Greg Lawson and Steve Fivey. The music of Cassani’s native rural Lombardy, together with its venerable Rivoltano dialect (from which “ansema” translates as “together), mingle seamlessly with Scottish folk influences and echoes from that early jazz background, in beautifully crafted tunes and songs celebrating the power of connection and community.

Similar themes, from another contrasting perspective, surface through the work of Scottish poet William Soutar, who spent many years bedridden by illness. Originally commissioned as a musical theatre piece, and recently released as an album, In A Sma Room features Irish jazz/folk singer Debra Salem’s settings of selected Soutar poems, performed with pianist Paul Harrison, guitarist Kevin Mackenzie and fiddler Patsy Reid.
