Highland fiddler, Graham Mackenzie debuts his second studio album, The Dawning.
The Dawning is the follow up to his critically acclaimed 1st album Crossing Borders written for the New Voices series at Celtic Connections 2015. Influenced by Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton styles of fiddle playing, Graham’s new work combines self penned tunes alongside repertoire that has shaped him as a musician. He draws on his experience of performing with cross genre group, the Grit Orchestra. Graham is joined by a stellar 6-piece band featuring Mike McGoldrick, Innes Watson, Jim Molyneux, James Lindsay, Neil Yates and Matt Carmichael.
Staran are a collective of some of the most sought-after artists on the Scottish folk scene. Artists featured are Kim Carnie (vocals), John Lowrie (Piano), Innes White (Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar), James Lindsay (Bass) and Jack Smedley (Fiddle). The group released their self-titled debut album in May 2021. ‘Staran’, meaning path, trail or stepping stones in Gaelic, reflects the themes of ‘places’ and ‘moments’ that run through their music. While the overall sound is rooted in Scottish traditional music, there are elements of inspiration from the genres of jazz, minimalism and experimental electronica.
