Gavin Marwick: Quarterdays and Gatehouse

Fiddler Gavin Marwick joins a fabulous group of friends in The Barony Hall for the finale of his recent project: a series of EPs of his original music celebrating the old Scots Quarter Days. The performance marks a year since the series started in February 2023 with Candlemas (Aaron Jones on cittern), followed by Whitsun (Wendy Stewart on harp) in May, Lammas (Ruth Morris on nyckelharpa) in August and finally Martinmas (Phil Alexander on accordion and piano) in November. Expect a rousing selection of duo moments from the EPs as well as bigger sections involving everyone, alongside other special guests, including Journeyman stalwart Fraser Fifield.

Support comes from traditional Irish four-piece Gatehouse. The band – Rachel Garvey (vocals), Jacinta McEvoy (guitar and concertina), John McEvoy (fiddle and mandolin) and John Wynne (flute and whistles) – have gained a reputation for their tasteful interpretation of traditional songs and vibrant instrumentals, combining “masterful technical proficiency” with “vocal numbers where the sparkle glows”.

This event is delivered in partnership with the University of Strathclyde, as part of their Diamond Jubilee programme.  Celebrating the University’s unique contribution to the world since the granting of a Royal Charter in 1964, the Jubilee explores Strathclyde’s innovative approach to education and research and the institution’s impact on society over more than 225 years since its foundation in 1796, as well as looking to the future and the next chapter of the Strathclyde story.
