Celtic Connections 2024

Carlos Nuñez is the poster boy of Galician music, but it's a title he has earned by both talent and hard work. With chops like  on the local bagpipes (called gaita), but a penchant for researching the tradition and its origins, he has become one of Spain's most recognizable musicians and a major force behind the reconstruction of the Galician musical tradition. Northern Spain has always been as much a part of the Celtic world as a Romance country, with strong ties to both Ireland and Scotland, and it was those Nuñez has explored, as well as other strands which have taken his music through flamenco and even into North Africa and the Middle East.

The special guests include Glen Hansard and Brendan Begley, National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland, Natalie McMaster, Karen Matheson, and Tim Edey.

Award-winning singer, Hannah Rarity, has made a lasting impression since being warmly embraced by the folk world, winning BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year (2018) and recording and touring with top acts Blazin’ Fiddles, Rura, Niteworks and Cherish the Ladies. Both of her albums ‘Neath the Gloaming Star’ (2018) & ‘To Have You Near’ (2022) have been shortlisted for Album of the Year at the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards and in 2022, she was invited to work as co-musical director for the Opening Concert of Celtic Connections.
