Throughout  the pandemic, the devoted creativity and resourcefulness of musicians’ responses to lockdown have woven a defiant silver lining to the COVID cloud – and none more so than flute/whistle genius Brian Finnegan’s extraordinary 2021 album Hunger of the Skin. Composed during March and April 2020, it’s a kaleidoscopic collaborative synthesis between Finnegan’s Irish traditional roots and myriad international and contemporary sounds, on a mission – in his words – “to honour the power of human touch, of shared mind, of real connection, not virtual, and real embodied joy”. From the album’s stellar guest-list, Finnegan is joined by multi-instrumentalist Seán Óg Graham, Patsy Reid on strings, bassist Conor McCreanor and drummer John Blease.

With years of friendship and a wealth of instruments between them (pipes, whistles, cittern, guitar and melodeon), Ross Ainslie and Tim Edey’s duo performances are a true labour of love – and of fun, meanwhile uniting two of today’s most prodigiously talented and original folk artists.
