Festival favourites RURA have teamed up with five folk music luminaries to create a unique collaborative EP, premiered here at our 2022 festival. Adored for their electrifying mash-up of pipes, flute, bodhran and guitar, RURA's 10th anniversary gig sold out the Old Fruitmarket during Celtic Connections 2020. When Covid hit, gig-starved music lovers lapped up the resultant live album, which fizzed with everything they were missing.
RURA themselves used the touring pause to work virtually with musical heroes, including fiddle-player and composer Duncan Chisholm; rising vocal star Hannah Rarity; and world renowned multi-instrumentalist and Gaelic folk singer Julie Fowlis. Along with flautist, piper, and composer Michael McGoldrick and innovative piper and composer Ross Ainslie, this prodigious collective are finally together onstage, along with a stellar house band and strings. Watch those sparks fly.
N’famady Kouyaté is a young energetic master musician from Guinea (Conakry), who relocated to Cardiff in 2019. A talented multi-instrumentalist who wowed audiences across the UK and Ireland during autumn/winter 2019/20 with his modern interpretations of traditional West African Mandingue songs and rhythms supporting Gruff Rhys on the Pang! album tour. N’famady’s primary instrument is the balafon – the traditional wooden xylophone, sacred to West African culture and his family heritage of the griot/djeli. In Guinea he founded ‘Les Héritiers du Mandingue’ a tradi-modern group that toured extensively in West Africa.
