Taking its title from the old Aberdeenshire love song popularised by the late great Tony Cuffe, Neath the Gloamin’ Star showcases the younger generation of artists who have succeeded Cuffe and his peers as leaders of the Scots folk song revival. With a line-up including Fiona Hunter, Paul McKenna, Ellie Beaton, Cameron Nixon and Jenny Sturgeon, plus joint musical directors Hannah Rarity and Innes White, the featured artists have researched and adapted material from archive recordings and other sources, crafting arrangements that highlight both the tradition’s enduring vitality and the performers’ contemporary creativity.

Besides their talents as vocalists and interpreters, all these singers are also noted songwriters, adding their own contributions into the Scots carrying stream. Reflecting Scottish folk song’s historic and current kinship with other Celtic territories and with US roots music, tonight’s array of home-grown talent is joined by Scottish-Irish-Manx instrumental firebrands Ímar, and Irish rising stars The Jeremiahs. Adding to the lush arrangements will be accompaniment from Alligin String Octet featuring Katrina Lee, Kana Kawashima, Seonaid Aitken, Kristan Harvey (violins), Patsy Reid, Rhoslyn Lawton (violas), Alice Allen and Julia Wagner (Cellos), alongside a house band that includes festival favourites Anna Massie and Megan MacDonald.
