Grammy-nominated Irish-American supergroup Cherish The Ladies are a Celtic Connections favourite, and this year’s show marks 35 years since their debut on a New York stage, when they boldly challenged the male domination of their musical genre. Led by the ebullient, All-Ireland flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden, the band also features Glasgow-born Kathleen Boyle on keys, Irish fiddler Nollaig Casey, as well as Mary Coogan and Mirella Murray on an eclectic range of instruments. Their near-20-album track record includes 2001’s The Girls Won’t Leave The Boys Alone and, most recently, 2018’s The Heart Of The Home.
Their vivacious blend of whistles, strings and vocals, also make for unforgettable live performances. “Kick-ass playing, sensational singing, dynamic dancing and infectious humour”, wrote the Belfast Telegraph. From slow airs to foot-stomping reels, their music is energising, infectious and wildly entertaining. A night out with these ladies is not to be missed.
