Violinist and composer Catriona Price (Twelfth Day, Fara) is one of the most versatile musicians working in Scotland today. A prolific and highly trained classical violinist, grass-roots folk fiddler, composer, vocalist and project leader, Catriona studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music having spent her childhood in Orkney sessions and fiddle groups. Catriona is equally at home in a folk or improvisation session as in an orchestra or chamber group, and is passionate about breaking down genre barriers and collaborating across art forms and cultures in all of her work.

Here Catriona launches her debut solo album Hert (Orcadian Scots for ‘heart’) – a folk, jazz, classical and pop infused suite in eight movements for vocal trio, string quartet, jazz trio, harp and flute, first performed as part of the New Voices series at Celtic Connections 2020. Initially inspired by George Mackay Brown’s iconic poetry, Catriona set out to find seven more writers from her homeland of Orkney, representing the contrasting perspectives that make up the rich tapestry of Orkney life. The music draws light upon the un-stereotypical characters – those who may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of a small island community.
