Such was the recent verdict of one young participant in the Gaelic-based teaching festivals organised annually since 1986 by the Ullapool-based organisation Fèis Rois. Joining Fèis Rois are Comhaltas who were founded to keep Irish traditions high on the cultural agenda.
This afternoon’s 21st anniversary concert also features the specially-convened Celtic Connections Youth Orchestra, comprising a wealth of talent from the Strathclyde University and RSAMD degree courses, City of Edinburgh Music School and the West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra, all conducted by Mark Sheridan.
They will be performing a brand new composition by Dick Gaughan – Treaty 300, marking 300 years since the Act of Union, together with the acclaimed folk/orchestral work Mackay’s Memoirs, by the late Martyn Bennett. Treaty 300 asserts the strength of Scotland’s culture and sense of unique identity. The work reflects Dick Gaughan’s life-long view that the 1707 Treaty should be repealed and all the constituent countries that make up the United Kingdom restored as fully independent nations.
