Long secure in their worldwide reputation as one of Ireland’s finest traditional bands, the Sligo-based seven-piece Dervish make a long-overdue return to Celtic Connections.

Born out of friendships and sessions in 1989, the band still includes four of its five original members, while the current line-up has now been in place for eight years, a degree of consistency and cohesion that’s the springboard for the livewire freshness of their music, a sparkling vocal and instrumental blend of traditional, contemporary and original material. They are currently at work on their eighth album.

The singer, songwriter and guitarist Luka Bloom is also sure of a warm welcome back to Glasgow. The younger brother of Christy Moore, he has successfully sidestepped this considerable fraternal shadow with his hypnotic live performances and a string of quietly compelling albums, most recently 2005’s Innocence, which prompted Hybrid magazine to describe him as
