Having just turned 50 last year, Irish fiddle legend Frankie Gavin enters his second half-century with a dynamic new band in tow.
A celebrated musical pioneer whose free ranging musicality is rooted in the classic early 20th century style of Michael Coleman and his contemporaries, Gavin has always thrived on collaboration, primarily at the helm of his seminal band De Dannan. His mouthwatering new line-up, Hibernian Rhapsody, features guitarist Tim Edey, pianist Carl Hession, accordionist Derek Hickey, vocalist Michelle Lally and special guest Rick Epping on harmonica.
Galician seven-piece Berrogüetto were also celebrating in 2006, with the release of their fourth album 10.0 marking a decade since their formation.
Ranked among the most accomplished and inventive bands to emerge from Galicia’s folk revival – and one of the region’s most exciting live acts – they create a truly sumptuous sound, featuring fiddle, bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, saxophone, piano, harp, accordion, guitar, bass, percussion and vocals. Fans of Celtic Connections 2004’s opening show Harvest may remember the band’s exquisite singer Guadi Galego.
