Well over a decade since their earliest gigs in Edinburgh’s aptly named Legends bar, Shooglenifty continue to lead the Scottish folk/fusion pack, with their signature combination of superb musicianship, awesome ensemble cohesion and out-there inventiveness.
Now featuring Tasmania’s Luke Plumb (mandolin/banjo) and bassist Quee Macarthur alongside original members Angus Grant (fiddle), Garry Finlayson (banjo/banjax), Malcolm Crosbie (guitars) and James Mackintosh (percussion), they are known the world over as one of celtic music’s hottest dance acts, and are currently at work on their fifth studio album.
Joining the band is groundbreaking Inuk throat singer, Tanya Tagaq Gillis who, has brought an ancient Inuit vocal game to the heights of the experimental music scene.
A linchpin of the Breton revival for more than 20 years, Skolvan comprises five of Brittany’s most respected musicians, including guitarist Gilles le Bigot, percussionist Dominique Molard, and Youenn le Bihan on bombarde, biniou, and his own oboe-like invention, the piston.
Tonight’s performance will feature Skolvan’s celebrated ten-piece big band line-up, which has been likened to a Breton La Bottine Souriante, and includes a five-piece brass section.
