As tonight’s all-star cast will comprehensively demonstrate, the banjo nowadays really doesn’t deserve to be the butt of so many jokes – but they’re sure to be flying thick and fast nonetheless, along with a wealth of deadly serious playing.
From America come the contrastingly individual, uniformly outstanding talents of fusion virtuoso Béla Fleck, neo-bluegrass doyenne and Solas’s founder Séamus Egan.
Leading off the night will be Ireland’s four-string banjo sensation Gerry O’Connor with Tony Byrne on guitar and Brendan O’Regan on bouzouki. Also from Ireland is Dublin-born Éamonn Coyne, a regular collaborator with Alison Brown as well as a member of Salsa Celtica.
