With their roots just over the water in Donegal, the Brennan and Duggan clans behind Clannad have long had close ties to Glasgow. Lead vocalist Máire Brennan, in fact, made her first stage appearances with an earlier family outfit, the Slieve Foy Band, who were a popular draw in 1950s Glasgow dance-halls. It’s thus wholly fitting that Clannad should choose Glasgow for their first UK show in ten years.
The band have been concocting their uniquely soulful blend of Irish and original music for more than three decades now, and following a recent sabbatical to pursue solo projects, their live reunion is sure to be a memorable one.
Sephira make their debut UK appearance at Celtic Connections this year and have already been mesmerising audiences in Ireland with their live performances. They comprise three young classically trained Irish musicians who have forged their own musical niche – Joyce O’Leary (vocals/violin), Ruth O’Leary (violin) and Colm Henry (piano). Their unique sound can be compared to the emotional swells of a movie – sensational, dramatic, and filled with the full sweep of human passions. Look out for their debut album Believe which was released in 2006 to critical acclaim.
