In September 2005, the celebrated Irish-American group Solas performed a very special 10th anniversary concert in Philadelphia, proving that even after a decade, they are still as fresh and edgy as ever. Last year’s live CD release, Reunion: A Decade of Solas, vividly captured what many described as a once-in-a-lifetime show.
For their Celtic Connections debut, Solas will bring Reunion to Glasgow, featuring current members Séamus Egan, Winifred Horan, Mick McAuley, Deirdre Scanlan and Eamon McElholm, as well as past members Karan Casey, John Williams and John Doyle.
Witness Solas interpret a wide range of material in surprising ways; songs by contemporary artists are given a celtic tinge, making explicit their connections with the deep, ultimately celtic roots of American music.
Songlines magazine recently described Iarla Ó Lionáird as “one of the most innovative forces in modern music.” Raised in the ancient Irish tradition of sean-nós singing, the Afro Celts vocalist has forged a strikingly original solo career, his latest album being Invisible Fields (2005), which interweaves his magisterial vocals with loops, samples, found sounds and electronic effects.
