Cornershop and 1990s

Although still best known for their 1997 crossover hit Brimful of Asha, the UK’s favourite indie-dance-country-funk-Punjabi-hip-hop outfit Cornershop have never stopped making music, albeit in a creatively mercurial fashion that consistently confounds pigeonholes. “The only thing all our records have in common,” acknowledges co-founder Tjinder Singh, “is that each one tries to sound utterly different.” Their new album, Cornershop and the Double-O Groove Of, features the wondrous vocals and female-centred songwriting of previously-unknown Hindi singer Bubbley Kaur.

Support tonight comes from indie rock band 1990s, notably signed to Rough Trade Records after only their sixth gig – a first for Rough Trade. On the release of the band’s second album, Kicks, NME wrote “like Supergrass and British Sea Power before them, 1990s’ refusal to be difficult and consistent greatness makes them a hard concept to market. But a fantastic one to listen to.”
