Stretching themselves in a very different but no less intriguing direction to that of their other Celtic Connections gig, with ex-Cream legend Jack Bruce, renegade folk trio Lau join forces with the adventurous Northern Irish composer Brian Irvine – whose CV ranges from film scores to free improvisation – and leading contemporary ensemble the Northern Sinfonia, in the première performance of Strange Attractors. Rather than simply orchestrating Lau’s material, Irvine has built on snippets of it to craft both dialogue and juxtapositions between the two elements – and Lau should certainly be well warmed up to meet the challenge, having played their own set in the first half.
