celtic on tv and radio

Celtic Connections is pleased to collaborate once again with BBC Radio, with five live shows coming from BBC Scotland’s headquarters at Pacific Quay.

‘Live from the Festival’

All Year Round

During the festival we enjoy a strong relationship with the BBC with many live and recorded broadcasts. Many of these broadcasts pop up throughout the year so it’s worth checking the listings.

We think the best resource and entry point to all things folk across the BBC channels is here at www.bbc.co.uk/music/genres/folk

BBC Radio Scotland

Since day 1 of the festival we have collaborated and enjoyed a close relationship with our national radio station. Over the years Radio Scotland has presented live foyer shows, full concert broadcasts, news reports and numerous interviews with artists. We have even seen many of Radio Scotland’s presenters take to our stage including Archie Fisher, Iain Anderson and Mary Ann Kennedy. Programmes that have broadcast from the festival include Travelling Folk, Pipeline, The Reel Blend, Take the Floor and Iain Anderson.

BBC Radio 2

Claudia Winkleman visits the festival for a live show featuring special guests and performance. BBC Radio 2 will broadcast the highlights of this year’s festival in an hour long special presented by Ricky Ross on Saturday 30th January.

BBC Radio 3

Following the success of last year’s broadcasts from the Festival Club, BBC Radio 3’s World on 3 returns with two live broadcasts from Late Night Sessions in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Mary Ann Kennedy presents performances by some of Celtic Connections’ finest artists, plus some special guests, on Friday 22nd and 29th January from 10pm until late.

BBC Scotland TV

BBC Scotland will visit the Old Fruitmarket on Monday 18th January to record a special showcase programme featuring festival highlights for transmission on BBC Two Scotland, which will be presented by Mary Ann Kennedy.

Year of Song

We are a nation which loves to sing and 2010 is BBC Scotland’s Year of Song. From Gaelic to Scots, traditional to contemporary, jazz to rock, opera to pop, song will be a theme throughout the year and BBC Scotland will promote and feature songs and songwriters, wherever possible, across Radio Scotland,Radio Nan Gaidheal, television and online.

Year of Song visits Celtic Connections for the Scots Songbook concert in the Main Auditorium and Jewels of the Ocean at the Old Fruitmarket. Both of these events will be recorded by BBC Scotland for future transmission.

Look out for Year of Song events, programmes and concerts running throughout 2010. You can hear all of the above and more from the festival by logging on to BBC Scotland’s music site

Horo Gheallaidh

BBC ALBA Celtic music series Horo Gheallaidh returns to film at Celtic Connections this year. Filming takes place at the Tron Theatre and it’s a great opportunity for fans of Celtic Connections to watch a rich line-up of Scottish and international artists in town for the festival.

Filming is in the Vic Bar at the Tron Theatre from Monday 18th January to Thursday 21st January; and then Sunday 24th and Monday 25th January, from 10am to 7pm. (Audience can come in for as long or as short a time as they wish)

The series will be aired on BBC ALBA later in the year, but for information on being part of the audience contact 07776132255.
